Etudes on Hybridisation
'Hybrid' is a fine word: it starts at the bottom, 'hy', and swiftly rises: 'id'. Delicate consonants. Symmetry hyb-rid. But one should not be seduced by characters, which the virus demonstrates strikingly.
Cowbells with saxophone, church bells featuring drum & bass, doorbells with piano accompaniment. Polonaise. Steel helmets and pyjamas for the Opera Ball. Canceled.
Computer with flower petals. Printers with diced cheese. Books with screwdrivers. Table with empty boxes. Staging and testing hybrid situations.
We load a washing machine with different coloured dresses, plastic toys, foods, washing powder and start a gentle cycle.
Hybridisation provides an alternative to purity. Club Hybrid circumvents dichotomies within a practice of blending. Non-systematic collages. Craft. Building models. Visual-lab. Hip-hop going from the thing to the image and back.
Doors occur, a window peeps in. A window is a space in itself. A roof could be placed above it. A roof as membrane or as space. Roof-floor. Distributing talking-time. Discourse-account. Interrupters and connectors.
Movements, mixtures: moving beyond the segregations of modernity.
We do not know for sure - but we are experimenting.
With a few decisions, a lot can be set in motion. Not the question: What? But rather the question: How? The answer is How.
Club Hybrid: a place of coincidences, randomness as methodology – thus naturally a space for surprise, but also giving space for possible failures, of boredom, of incomprehensibility. We need to keep our feet on the ground.
In the south of Graz, where commerce, industry and single-family homes meet, Club Hybrid constructs and performs a place of experimentation, of display and representation and of discourse.
